Just a quick update. The plan communicated to us was that today's festivities would begin at noon. We were even asked to check in early so they could get the pre-meds done and be ready for arrival of the ofatumumab. Through a combination of circumstances, it took until 6 PM to get the ball rolling. This is no place to be if you require on time performance. You get used to it. Or your head explodes. And it is not for lack of caring. It's just complicated. It was all made comfortable as Pastor John came by to chat, and hopefully move JoJo up God's priority list through some heartfelt prayer.
Everybody is understandably edgy about JoJo's response to the antibody, especially given her sensitivity to rituximab, a similar cancer drug. The infusion begins very slowly and is gradually increased. If at any time she begins to exhibit adverse symptoms, they back off. I left her about 10 PM this evening and she was tolerating it well. They had reached the maximum infusion rate, so hopefully they will be done by 3 AM. A week from now, she will receive a much higher dose. One step at a time.
JoJo is undergoing a difficult transition. Throughout the nearly 13 years she has dealt with CLL, treatment of her cancer was deliberate, methodical and measured because it is an indolent or lazy cancer. Decisions do not have to be rushed. That all changed on Monday when this new type of diffuse large B cell lymphoma was identified. Time is of the essence and the consequences of treatment success or failure are far more intense. To her credit, she is hanging in, but there is certainly some anxiety and fear on the margins.
We will keep you posted on developments. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Times are tough, but we still have much to be thankful for. Keep the faith.
Cancer sucks

JoAnne was discharged at noon on T'giving Day. The infusion came off without incident. She feels good and is very upbeat as this was a big hurdle to get over. Back to the clinic for a checkup on Tuesday. The next round can probably be done in the clinic although it will be an all day affair with larger doses. Good first step.
